The purpose of Submodule 1 is to introduce students to many of the common categories of diversity found on the college campus and in society at large. Students read a general history of ethnicity in the United States and short histories of different racial and ethnic groups that write and produce plays. Every week students are expected to post on their personal profile page at least one encounter with news items they have read and/or personal encounters they have had that deal with diversity issues.
Learning Objectives:
By participating in this module, student will be able to:
1. Identify common terms used to express identity, difference, and/or preference or bias.
2. Describe unique and basic features that characterize different racial and ethnic theatre groups often by their locale in different parts of the country, in different cities, and in different communities.
3. Identify the specific issues of diversity dealt with in the play Wedding Band.
4. Post at least one news item this week about their encounters with questions of diversity.
Tasks:
In the course packet Read pages 1-7 (Chapter I: The American Mosaic), Introduction to Ethnic Theatre in the United States (pages 29-36), and (pages 17-20).
2.1.1 Post your Personal Summary of Ethnic Theatre in the USA linked to your Portfolio Page. (NOTE: First, go to your personal Portfolio page. Click edit once on your Profile Page. The title of your link should be the first initials of your first and last name in caps or not, it doesn't matter. Mine reads as follows: FRSummary of Ethnic Theatre in the USA. PLEASE DO NOT name your page Personal Summary of Ethnic Theatre in the USA. Highlight the name you have given to your Summary page, just as I have done above. Be sure to check that you want the page to go to a separate window. Then click save. Test the link by clicking on it. You should be taken to your summary page which has not yet been edited. At this point you may do one of two things, click edit and Name the summary and begin typing, OR upload a document providing your summary of ethnic theatre in the USA. To upload a document you simply click edit on your Summary page and click the file button above. Find the file on your computer and upload it. It may take a few seconds to upload. Double click the file and it will appear on your page as a document to be downloaded by me. It will appear wherever you have last placed your cursor so be careful to put the cursor where you want the document to appear. OK? And more importantly, be sure to put your name on this document!)
Read The Wedding Band located on pages 95-118 in the Course Packet.
2.1.2 Go to the Diversity Page and respond accordingly, each of you creating a separate discussion field.
Be sure to post at least one news item and your comments on it on your Diversity news page linked to your Portfolio. (or you may post more items, as you wish). The deadline for this week is September 1.
